1947 - 2022

John Joseph “Horvie” Horvath Sr., 74, of Summit Hill, entered into eternal rest Sunday, March 06, 2022 in his residence. He was the husband of Cheryl Anne (Castle) Horvath. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on June 28th of last year. Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Michael and Sophie (Zadorocny) Horvath. He was employed as a Math Teacher for the Panther Valley School District for 51 years until retiring and also was an instructor at the Youth Forestry Camp, Hickory Run. He was also a former Athletic Director for the Panther Valley School District. He was a graduate of Marian High School Class of 1965 and then furthered his education and received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in mathematics from Penn State University Class of 1969.  He was a member of St. Mark’s and St. John’s Episcopal Church, Jim Thorpe where he was the tour director and very active in all church functions. He was a former Summit Hill Little League coach and a former Panther Valley Wrestling and Softball coach for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Schuylkill League Athletic Directors Association, the District XI Athletic Directors Association, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association, the Locust Valley Fish and Game Club, Barnesville, the Summit Hill American Legion, the former Summit Hill Rod and Gun Club’s dart team, the Summit Hill Recreation Association, and past treasurer of the Carbon County Nittany Lions Club.

Surviving along with his wife are sons John Jr. and his wife Karen and David and his wife Allison both of Summit Hill; a daughter Jennifer Horvath of Summit Hill; a brother Michael Horvath of Florida; grandchildren John III, Emily, Joshua, Katrina, and Jase; a great granddaughter Brynlee; and several nieces and nephews.

 Funeral Services will be announced at a later date. Donations will be accepted in his name to establish a Mathematics Scholarship Fund for a Panther Valley High School graduating senior, c/o John Horvath, 245 E.
